Flores Island, literally the Island of the Flowers, is an island of the Western group (Grupo Ocidental) of the Azores. It has an area of 143 km², a population of approximately 3907 inhabitants, and, together with Corvo Island of the western archipelago, lies within the North American Plate. The island of Flores has deep valleys and high peaks, lagoons bordered by hydrangeas, cliffs carved by grottoes, hot springs and the remains of old volcanoes. It is considered by a lot of people the most beautiful island of all the archipelago. On May 27, 2009, Flores was chosen to be included on UNESCO's list of World Network of Biosphere Reserves at the Man and the Biosphere.
